Ontario Invests in Dance Classes for Healthcare Workers Amid Surging Omicron Cases

Ontario government announced new pandemic restrictions amid soaring cases of the Omicron variant this week.

Doug Ford’s circuit breaker and public health measures include capacity limits on retail shops and closures of indoor dining, event venues, gyms, and schools. As we all know, these measures are not nearly enough to stop the pandemic of misogyny, racism, and disease coming from the unvaccinated. However, this may be the best course of action until our leaders formulate a feasible final solution to deal with the plague of unvaccinated “people” who still maintain the right to infect our society.

On a positive note, the province will be investing in dance classes for all healthcare workers this winter. The initiative is intended to strengthen trust in the public health, provide a larger social media following for nurses, and to help the province avoid further lockdowns.
Dr. Kieran Moore, the Chief Medical Officer of Ontario, shared the reasoning behind the initiative:

“We had to let go of several healthcare workers last season that had fallen victim to dangerous misinformation. The use of racist and misogynistic dog whistles was prevalent amongst these compromised workers. They used dastardly phrases like ‘bodily autonomy’ and ‘informed consent’. It was truly disturbing.”

Dr. Moore described the necessary step to rid the system of any sympathy towards the anti-vaxx mob. However, the remaining health care workers have complained about burnout. The province’s leading medical expert is confident that the introduction of volun-mandatory dance classes will help alleviate this exhaustion.

The “Dance for Covid” initiative raises spirits among hospital staff but it is no double-masked walk in the park. Like every other Public Health decision since the beginning of the pandemic, it was the perfect option based on the existing science and data. Despite this, however, the dance initiative still has its share of critics, saboteurs, and dance deniers.

There has already been an incident in a Toronto hospital where a neurosurgeon refused to participate in a dance routine for a potentially viral TikTok video last week. The white male cis-het doctor tried to justify his refusal to partake in the program simply because he was “in the middle of a brain surgery operation.” Thankfully, the hospital administration dealt with the controversy by forcing the doctor to resign for spreading workplace toxicity.

“He refused to learn the dance moves. He thought our TikTok’s were ‘stupid’ and ‘for kids’. We showed him that one of our videos from last week got over 80K views… and he didn’t even care. It was very unprofessional.”

Scholars have also pointed out that this initiative is a great opportunity to bring Indigenous dancing techniques, traditionally used for healing in shamanistic rituals, into mainstream healthcare practice. While we fully agree that replacing crude medical tools like scalpels and MRI scanners with beautiful spirit dances would go a long way towards advancing truth & reconciliation with First Nations and strengthening our healthcare system, we are also concerned about the potential for cultural appropriation.
